Christmas Pageants at Saint Mark's

December 16, 2009

“And the Word became flesh and lived among us……” John 1:14a

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
In just 3 months there are already too many ways to name in which I have been blessed through the Saint Mark’s community, but high on the very long list of blessings are the two Christmas Pageants I witnessed here over the last few days. I’ve been around the pageant block, but I can’t remember ever being so overcome with the sheer joy bouncing around the room at both our Sunday morning pageant and at the Saint Mark’s Preschool pageant. At both I was torn between watching the players and watching the crowd. If you want to see the love of God take on flesh, watch the face of a mother as her 4 year old daughter, bedecked in halo and wings, sings every word of “Go Tell It on the Mountain” perfectly. Or pay attention to the way a motley crew of teenage shepherds guides with utter tenderness their flock of tiny sheep, donkeys, cows, dogs and yes, pigs.

More than two thousand years ago, God’s love took on flesh in a powerful, wonderful, surprising new way. Today the One who came to live with us and to embody that joyful, tender, fierce love is enfleshed in our community in countless ways….on our faces, in our feasts, in the offering of our gifts here and in the world. I celebrate the way the Incarnation is not just something that happened once, but is happening among us and between us now. I celebrate the particular way Christ takes on flesh at Saint Mark’s, and look forward to a new year together of living Christ’s love.

Merry Christmas!
Faithfully yours,

Pastor Carri+
